In this role, Smith will lead Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) across the Eastern Panhandle, including midwives, registered nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. She will collaborate closely with hospital leadership to guide strategies that support effective integration of APPs into care models, with a focus on expanding access to care while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety. Smith will report to Dr. Michael Londner, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Berkeley Medical Center.

“We are excited to welcome Kate into this important leadership role,” Londner said. “She brings deep clinical expertise, and a strong understanding of the value APPs bring to our care teams. As we continue to grow access to care across the Eastern Panhandle, her leadership will be vital in ensuring our patients continue to receive safe, high-quality care close to home.”

Smith is a board-certified adult nurse practitioner with more than 20 years of experience caring for patients ages 13 and older in the primary care setting. A West Virginia native, Smith has spent most of her career caring for the Hagerstown community, including time at Meritus Health.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the region and to step into a role that supports both our patients and our care teams,” Smith said. “This region is my home, and I am excited to care for my neighbors while helping strengthen access to quality healthcare throughout our communities.”

In addition to her leadership responsibilities, Smith will continue to see patients at WVU Internal Medicine Spring Mills, located at 61 Campus Drive, Suite 200. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 304-274-6343.
