CEO Spends a Day in the Life with Internal Medicine Residents

Regional President of WVU Hospitals East and President and CEO of WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center Mark O’Hern is continuing his Day in the Life series, engaging with the employees who make WVU Medicine’s care possible every day. 

During this session, O’Hern spent time with internal medicine residents and teaching faculty at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center, learning more about the residents, their, work and how they experience subspecialty training through their current rotations.  

“What stood out most was how strongly the residents feel that Berkeley Medical Center is an exceptional place to learn and train. They consistently described an environment where they feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to pursue their individual career goals,” O’Hern said. “Whether they choose to become hospitalists, pursue subspecialty fellowships, or transition into academic roles, it is clear this program is providing a strong and flexible foundation.”

O’Hern highlighted the leadership of the Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine Eastern Division Ryan McCarthy, MD, and multiple providers who are part of the hospitalist teaching service and play a critical role in creating a strong learning environment for our residents.  

“The residents spoke highly of the support, engagement, and encouragement they receive, which reflects both his leadership and the deep commitment of our teaching faculty,” O’Hern said.  

As an academic medical center, WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center has a responsibility to train the next generation of clinicians. Approximately one-third of the faculty providers have come through a WVU Medicine medical school, residency, or fellowship program.  

“These programs are not only central to our mission; they are also one of our most important long-term recruitment strategies,” O’Hern said. “I want to thank Dr. McCarthy, our teaching faculty, and our internal medicine residents for making education such a vibrant part of our campus and for the culture you are helping to build at Berkeley Medical Center.”
