MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Operating hours at the Greater Monongalia County COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic at the former Sears location at the Morgantown Mall have been expanded to provide easier access to those who need to receive their vaccines outside normal business hours.
“Only 30 percent of West Virginians have received their first vaccine, and only 20 percent of the state’s population is fully vaccinated. This concerns us because if we continue at this rate, we’re not going to reach herd immunity in West Virginia,” Stephen Hoffmann, M.D., vice president of medical affairs and clinical programs and coordinator of COVID-related efforts at WVU Medicine, said. “If we don’t reach herd immunity, it’s likely that one of the virus’ mutations could cause another surge in cases.”
Upcoming hours for the clinic are:
- Saturday, April 10: 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Monday, April 12: 3-7 p.m.
- Tuesday, April 13: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Thursday, April 15: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Friday, April 16: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
All West Virginia residents age 16 and older are eligible for the vaccine. In addition, Pennsylvania residents who work in West Virginia or receive care at WVU Medicine can also receive the vaccine.
“Looking at the seven-day trend for new infections, we’re seeing a shift in COVID-positive infections to the younger population with those age 10-19 accounting for 19 percent of all COVID-positive cases and those age 20-29 accounting for 18 percent. Previously, we were seeing the higher percentage of positives among older individuals,” Dr. Hoffmann said. “This is why it is of critical importance that everyone eligible, those 16 and older, get their vaccines now.”
