CEO Spends a Day in the Life with CT Technologists
Employee of over 20 years shares insights into patient care, imaging practices
Regional President of WVU Health System, President and CEO of WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center Mark O'Hern recently spend a Day in the Life with team members in the CT department at Berkeley Medical Center for an inside look at how they make patient care happen every day.
During this latest session, O’Hern met with Computed Tomography Tech Amanda Truman, who has been with WVU Medicine for 23 years.
“Amanda gave me a firsthand look at the incredible flow and complexity of the CT department. With three CT scanners, the team simultaneously cares for inpatients, emergency department patients, and outpatients,” O’Hern said. “Because most CT exams are relatively quick, the volume and throughput of patients is tremendous.”
During his visit, O’Hern found that what can seem like a simple diagnostic test ends up requiring significant coordination, with the team balancing emergency cases, inpatient needs, and scheduled outpatient exams while maintaining safety, efficiency, and positive patient experiences.
While observing this high level of coordination, Amanda’s care for patients stood out.
"She takes the time to explain what to expect, communicates in a way patients can understand, and makes sure they feel safe throughout the experience,” he said. “She treats our patients like family, and that compassion is a powerful reminder that the patient experience is created in these everyday interactions by the people who care for our patients at the bedside.”
As WVU Medicine looks to the future, these insights into the CT department highlight how strategic investment in facilities and technology can improve access, support growth, and ultimately enhance the patient experience.
“Spending time in CT reinforced the value of getting out of the office and experiencing the work alongside our frontline teams. There is no substitute for seeing the pace, complexity, and compassion involved in caring for our patients firsthand,” O’Hern said. “Thank you, Amanda, for teaching me so much and for everything you do for our patients. And thank you to the entire CT team for the incredible work you do every day."
