Back on Her Feet: How Expert Spine Care Got One Patient Back to Living
WVU Medicine providers intervened after sudden back, leg pain from herniated discs
A summer family vacation was just around the corner when ChyAnn Bowden's plans were suddenly threatened by a debilitating pain that seemed to come out of nowhere.
"It felt like a lightning bolt went down my spine and down my leg," Bowden said. "It was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life."
At first, ChyAnn hoped the pain would improve on its own. Instead, it worsened over the next several days. Sitting became nearly impossible, and the pain eventually affected her ability to walk and carry out everyday activities.
ChyAnn was also concerned about an upcoming family beach vacation. She promised her 7-year-old son they would go parasailing.
That's when she was referred to Dr. Sandip Savaliya and the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute team.
After evaluating ChyAnn and the severity of her symptoms, Dr. Savaliya quickly developed a treatment plan.
“By the time ChyAnn came to me, her back and leg pain had become so severe that it was affecting her ability to walk,” Dr. Savaliya said. “Imaging revealed herniated discs that were placing pressure on a nerve. A minimally invasive procedure allowed us to relieve that pressure, treat the source of her symptoms, and put her on the path to recovery.”
For ChyAnn, receiving answers and a treatment plan quickly made a significant difference after days of debilitating pain.
"When I woke up after surgery, I already felt so much better," Bowden said. "Dr. Savaliya explained everything to me and made sure I understood what was happening. His bedside manner was top-tier."
ChyAnn said the intense pain that had disrupted her life improved almost immediately after surgery, allowing her to enjoy the family vacation she had been planning.
Having access to specialized care close to home also made an already difficult situation easier for ChyAnn and her family.
"I was really excited to hear they offered all of this right down the street," she said. "They are truly amazing people. It's an amazing office, and I appreciate them more than words can say."
